If you don’t correctly upkeep your look, you will suffer in the long run.

We care about our hair, and we hope you do too. Everyday hairstyles are easy to maintain, but twist maintenance can be challenging and time-consuming.

WHY TWIST MAINTENANCE TAKES MORE EFFORT THEN OTHER FASHIONED STYLINGS

Natural hair is spaced adequately for normal airflow and environmental changes. It’s easy to maintain since the hair can be position in any formable place that allows for the most manageable hair care routine.

Twists are not. Twists are any hair or strand that has been wrapped and curled into long plaits with any technique or method.

The strands are tightly woven and help together at the end with a sealing method. This could be a simple rubber band or hot water dipping, and even more complicated like hair glue and heat sealing.

This makes it more difficult to adequately clean and washes the strand without causing them to detangle or unravel.

BUILD-UP AND HOW IT’S POTENTIALLY DAMAGING YOUR NATURAL HAIR

Your hair naturally moisturized your scalp and roots with oils called sebum. This oil is good and evil. As your hair collects and absorbs this oil, it gradually makes its way up the hair strands nourishing the cuticles that engulf the entire strand.

When hair is twisted is makes it harder for this oil to travel, and it begins to puddle near the roots. This will collect dirt and dust that will over time turn into build-up. This typically happens when we don’t wash our hair adequately and live active lifestyles but spread up with we twist all of our hair into tight wraps.

Build-up begins to clog pores and slow regular hair growth. So too much of this can be a problem. This is why it is imperative to cleanse and maintain your hair with everyday hair care routines.

HOW TO PREP YOUR HAIR FOR A DEEP CLEANING

Cleaning your hair correctly can almost be as challenging as starting from scratch. The best practices for prepping your hair begin with properly untangling and sectioning your twisted plaits into manageable groupings.

  • Start with some big rubber bands, as these will help hold the sections together. Create about 6 to 8 different areas.
  • Grab lots of towels and free up space in your bathroom, as this is the best spot to perform the clarification.
  • Grab a spritz bottle and fill it with shampoo or deadlock detergent. Add water and shake vigorously.
  • Spray the solution into your scalp and begin to agitate the mixture.
  • After you have created suds in an area, rinse with a squirt bottle. Dry that section by dabbing a towel on the roots.
  • Continue this step throughout your entire head of twists to complete the cleaning.

WHY PROPER SLEEPING CAN PROTECT YOUR HAIR TWISTS

Many people do not realize how detrimental a restless sleep can be to your hair, frizz, and styling. If you toss and turn while you slumber, then listen carefully and take notes.

First and most important, if you are sleeping on a rock, you need to step into the 21st century and get yourself a soft silk pillowcase. The materials you lay your hair on the need to be quiet and smooth. Applying against rugged, aggressive materials will cause friction and destroy those locs.

For added control, wrap your hair up in a satin scarf. Hair can tangle up and become pressed from the weight of your skull. It would help if you had something that will cradle that skull.

Some styles are a little easier to take care of when it comes to the hair community. Styles like Marley twist, Senegalese twist, and mini twist look better when you don’t detangle them after a good night’s sleep. These styles use a more aggressive styling technique that leaves a lot more room to play with neatness. That being said, these specific styles will last a little longer without regular hair care treatments.
