SO, WHAT ARE THEY?

Curly faux locs were invented in the early 2,000’s and it’s manufactured and sold in two forms, human hair and curly synthetic fiber-like hair.  Once the hair type is chosen, it could then be used to create the loc style using either faux locs as well as crochet braids.  Check out some of the pictures below for a visual reference as well!

CURLS VS WAVES – KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

Curls and waves are essentially the same things. Both words are typically interchangeable when being used as a descriptive term.

Curls are typically more coarse and defined. The shape tends to bend around a center axis. This gives it a whirly shape that is seen throughout the entire strand from root to tip.

Wavy hair is more like a softer curl. Hair can be wavy but not curly. When a hair strand isn’t completely straight, it is usually described as being wavy. And when the ends seem to twist around, it’s described as curly.

2 WAY TO CURL THOSE BEAUTIFUL LOCS

You can curl hair in two easy and simple ways; HEAT AND PRODUCT MEMORY.

Heat allows you to change the structural compositions of many materials. Not all high-quality synthetic fibers are heat resistant. Most synthetic fibers can’t be heat-treated, and a lot of human hairs are treated with products not rated for intense heat. It will help if you read the label on all products before beginning to curl your synthetic hair.

5 ESSENTIAL TIPS WHEN USING HEAT

You don’t have to burn hair to get the desired faux locs hairstyle. Hairs like Kanekalon hair have hot water set technology. This allows the strands to be shaped and dipped in hot water to reset each strand’s structural shape.

  • You can also use intense heat to shape fibers.
  • If you are unsure about if your hair type can be heat rolled or curled, grab a small grouping of strands from the back. Touch the tips of the hair to a hot iron and see if it melts. Make sure to use a little bit of hair from underneath.
  • Run a brush or your fingers through the hair strands to detangle the fibers. You want to separate the hair into small straight hair groupings. This will allow you to make even and bouncy curls. Align the hairs in a row and wrap hair around the curler. Twist hair from the bottom to the top of the curler.
  • Wrap the hair on the right side of your head counter-clockwise when wrapping hair around the curler and opposite for the left side. Try not to hold the hair on hot iron for too long.
  • For extra hold on kinky and afro hair, use hairspray after curling hair to hold those curly tips and baby hairs.

ACTIONABLE TIPS & PRODUCTS TO HELP GET MORE CURLS, FAST!

Want a more permanent cul hairstyle? You can go with a perm.  Special curling chemicals are lathered over strands of hairs. These chemicals absorb into the hair’s core and change its composition.

While the chemicals are absorbing and drying in the hair, the strands are usually wrapped around cylindrical shaped rollers. The hair is either left to dry or heat dried. Perms are not always permanent and can holding effects can wash out over time.

Permanent products don’t have to be used to get rolls. You can use hairspray and waxes to hold the hair in curls as well.

CURLING HUMAN HAIR VS FAUX LOCS

We typically see 3 main types of human hair.

  • Virgin
  • Remy
  • all-natural

Once you curl virgin hair, it is no longer considered virgin hair. Most human hair is safe to use with hot curling irons and straighteners.  To help the process try brushing first. This alleviates and helps remove knots and tangles.

Always spray on some heat protection. Using heat treatment repeatedly can damage the cuticle of the hair and expose the inner cortex. When you start to curl your brushed hair around the curling iron, it’s advised to curl clockwise direction on your face’s right side and a counter-clockwise direction on the left side.

Lock in those curls with little sprits of hair spray. Perms use special curling chemicals that penetrate deep into the core of the hair strands. While the chemicals are absorbing and drying in the hair, the strands are usually wrapped around cylindrical shaped rollers.

HAIR POROSITY

All hair is different. From synthetic to human, there’s none exact. Even on one person’s head, all the hair is different. When you talk about hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture, you are talking about hair’s porosity.

Many factors affect porosity. Dryness and damage will affect how a hair can hold moisture as well as release it. Hair strands are made up of 3 major structures. When the outer layer, the cuticle, gets damaged or dry, they expose the inner layer.

The second layer is called the cortex. The cortex is the structural support for the hair. When this is damaged, the hair begins to lose its straightness and curl. This will make it harder for sebum to nourish the rest of the hair.

OUR 6 FAVORITE LIGHTWEIGHT & CURLY SYNTHETIC BRAIDING HAIR OPTIONS

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY

Faux locs come in many textures and styles. Typically most brands carry a “Curly” faux locs styling of their hair. If they don’t, you can always read on how to curl faux locs from this article!  We would, however, not recommend Amazon as a place to get your faux locs, and here are the reasons why:

  1. Literally, anybody and anyone can sell on there.
  2. Quality is always of question.
  3. Customer service is non-existent

Now, with that said, if there are reputable brand names on Amazon that many people recognize, know, and trust, well, give it a shot!  Otherwise, stick with us.

QUICK MAINTENANCE TIPS

Do you toss and turn at night? Wake up with a messy bedhead? You can destroy curls and really mess up those locs while you sleep. Rest can be devastating to good hairstyling. Take our advice and try these tricks!

  1. PILLOWCASE
That rock you rest your head on can be doing most of the damage. Switch pillowcases with a silk pillowcase. This reduces lint and static electricity on curly faux locs crochet hair. Silk is soft. It doesn’t snag your hairs as you sleep.
  2. WRAP THOSE LOCS
Trying to avoid that morning frizz? Worried about falling asleep and waking up with a monster on your head? Try wrapping up those locs in a satin bonnet. When the locs are wrapped, they cant move and detangle. This can help you lock in those bouncy curls.

FAQ

WHAT DETERMINES WHETHER I WILL HAVE STRAIGHT OR CURLY HAIR?

Human hair strands have something known as follicles shape. This shape is what actually determines if the hair will be curly or not!  You see, follicles of hair strands have a round, oval shape, and the more flat the oval, the curlier the hair will actually be.   Another determining factor is the way the hair tunnels through the epidermis of the scalp.  It’s a factor because if the follicles curve a lot, the sebum within the hair cannot travel the hair’s length and the sebum never reaches the dry parts of the hair.  Meaning, it doesn’t and won’t get the lubrication that it needs to be moisturized, bouncy, and curly.

HOW LONG CAN LOC CURLS LAST?

If your hair isn’t naturally curly, you will probably get 3 days the most. Locs are hard to achieve and even harder to keep curly. It really depends on how much product you used, how much treatment you implemented, and how well you maintain those locs from being damaged. To keep those curls looking amazing, you really need to watch out where you place your head and how you are sleeping.

The hair used in faux locs can be real or synthetic. Synthetic hair is going to hold the curled shape longer and better due to its chemical composition. Natural and human hairs are covered with protective scales called cuticles. They protect the inner structural layers from heat and abrasion.

Faux locs and dreadlocks that are not made to be curly tend to not hold the curly shape for long. Instead, a wavy faux loc is usually created.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU MAINTAIN LOCS?

It’s a silly question when you think about it. You will maintain your curly ends religiously if you want a healthy scalp and look aesthetically appealing. Maintenance comes in many forms and it doesn’t matter if you have a natural, full head of hair, faux locks, or a chunky full lace wig, you should still tend to your hair daily.

Keeping your scalp clean is essential to daily growth and natural-looking styles. Especially when you have cornrows or box braids. Hairs are locked tightly and are hard to clean properly. Styling your hair regularly can be worse than no styling your hair enough. Too much tension and movement can affect hair strands and follicles.

Having such an elegant style as faux locs requires DIY with all their hair care needs. Regular cleaning and styling are definitely required.

WHAT TYPE OF HAIR IS BEST?

There are many real and synthetic braids hair extensions you can use when making Curly Faux locs. For styles like butterfly locs, passion twist, gypsy locs, and bohemian locs, use a kanekalon synthetic fiber or hair with a built-in water wave. Kanekalon is safe and heat resistant.

DO CURLY FAUX LOCS COME PRE-LOOPED?

Typically only braiding hair extensions like goddess faux locs crochet hair come curled with a  pre-loop. Usually, pre-looped hair is wavy and has a curl at the end. A lot of styles like the famous Goddess locs and Bohemian Locs use curly ended faux locs.

WHAT ARE PROTECTIVE STYLES?

A protective style where synthetic or detached real hair is wrapped around the hair on your head, like armor, protecting the hair underneath.  Protective hairstyles are achieved with faux locs, crochet braids, and twists; basically, any crochet synthetic hair extensions. This hair material protects your real hair while still allowing it to grow and be maintained. Protective hairstyles are good for all ethnicities, white and black women wear protective styles all the time, it’s very common.  Here’s a quick hair tip, real dreadlocks, or dread locs, which are grown naturally over a long period of time, are not considered a protective style.

DOES CURLING YOUR HAIR DAMAGE IT?

Curling your natural hair too much is bad. You always want to protect hair from heat with some leave-in protection. Try to avoid ironing your hair too much.

Real hair has cuticles that dry and begins to bend outward from the center. As they become brittle and damaged, they break off, exposing the protein of the hair.

Crochet braiding hair can be damaged by heat, and always read the labels before applying heat. Lace front wigs will also be labeled if they are safe to be styled with heated tools.
