CURLS VS WAVES – KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
Curls and waves are essentially the same things. Both words are typically interchangeable when being used as a descriptive term.
Curls are typically more coarse and defined. The shape tends to bend around a center axis. This gives it a whirly shape that is seen throughout the entire strand from root to tip.
Wavy hair is more like a softer curl. Hair can be wavy but not curly. When a hair strand isn’t completely straight, it is usually described as being wavy. And when the ends seem to twist around, it’s described as curly.

You can curl hair in two easy and simple ways; HEAT AND PRODUCT MEMORY.
Heat allows you to change the structural compositions of many materials. Not all high-quality synthetic fibers are heat resistant. Most synthetic fibers can’t be heat-treated, and a lot of human hairs are treated with products not rated for intense heat. It will help if you read the label on all products before beginning to curl your synthetic hair.
5 ESSENTIAL TIPS WHEN USING HEAT
You don’t have to burn hair to get the desired faux locs hairstyle. Hairs like Kanekalon hair have hot water set technology. This allows the strands to be shaped and dipped in hot water to reset each strand’s structural shape.
- You can also use intense heat to shape fibers.
- If you are unsure about if your hair type can be heat rolled or curled, grab a small grouping of strands from the back. Touch the tips of the hair to a hot iron and see if it melts. Make sure to use a little bit of hair from underneath.
- Run a brush or your fingers through the hair strands to detangle the fibers. You want to separate the hair into small straight hair groupings. This will allow you to make even and bouncy curls. Align the hairs in a row and wrap hair around the curler. Twist hair from the bottom to the top of the curler.
- Wrap the hair on the right side of your head counter-clockwise when wrapping hair around the curler and opposite for the left side. Try not to hold the hair on hot iron for too long.
- For extra hold on kinky and afro hair, use hairspray after curling hair to hold those curly tips and baby hairs.

Want a more permanent cul hairstyle? You can go with a perm. Special curling chemicals are lathered over strands of hairs. These chemicals absorb into the hair’s core and change its composition.
While the chemicals are absorbing and drying in the hair, the strands are usually wrapped around cylindrical shaped rollers. The hair is either left to dry or heat dried. Perms are not always permanent and can holding effects can wash out over time.
Permanent products don’t have to be used to get rolls. You can use hairspray and waxes to hold the hair in curls as well.
CURLING HUMAN HAIR VS FAUX LOCS

Once you curl virgin hair, it is no longer considered virgin hair. Most human hair is safe to use with hot curling irons and straighteners. To help the process try brushing first. This alleviates and helps remove knots and tangles.

Many factors affect porosity. Dryness and damage will affect how a hair can hold moisture as well as release it. Hair strands are made up of 3 major structures. When the outer layer, the cuticle, gets damaged or dry, they expose the inner layer.
The second layer is called the cortex. The cortex is the structural support for the hair. When this is damaged, the hair begins to lose its straightness and curl. This will make it harder for sebum to nourish the rest of the hair.
